Cruising the Rivers

Ready to really experience a destination?

I love river cruising—there's nothing like experiencing a small ship, personalized service, and the destination's culture. Cruising on the river offers a unique way to really experience multiple destinations without the hassle of constantly packing and unpacking, and often, the ship is an extension of the destination itself.

With so many options, including different rivers and different cruise lines, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. That's where I come in! Having sailed on several rivers and cruise lines, I know the best options to match your travel style. I provide guidance on the river and itinerary best suited to your needs. Then, we talk about the different cruise lines and their inclusions.

A Few River Options

Danube

IMG_3772.JPG

This is my favorite river for first-time river cruisers. I love that you are able to see up to 10 different countries. There are both upper and lower Danube itineraries, each highlighting many different cultures. Typical itineraries on the Danube are 7 nights, but you can do a combination of the upper and lower for 14 nights. I love that in most locations you dock right in the city center and are immediately immersed in the town.

My Favorite Ports:

  • Wachau Valley

  • Vienna

  • Bratislava

Rhine

Sailing on the Rhine River is a perfect option for those looking for castles. The Rhine Gorge is filled with fairytale castles. This is also your chance to see lots of vineyards and medieval towns. Beautiful views await your every turn! This is also a great river to experience a Christmas market.

My Favorite Ports:

  • Amsterdam

  • Basel

  • Rhine Gorge

Rivers of France

With many rivers flowing through France, choosing one can be difficult. This is why many French river cruises include two rivers. The Moselle, Seine, Rhône, Saône, Dordogne, and Garonne are the main rivers of France, and each one focuses on different areas. French river cruises can focus on many things, such as wine, châteaus, history, and, of course, French food.

My Favorite Ports:

  • Bordeaux

  • Paris

  • Blaye

Chobe

Sailing on the Chobe River in Botswana is just the start of your African safari. This river cruise is a combination-style trip that includes land visits to South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Namibia, or Tanzania. Hopefully you will see the Big Five and so much more! What a great way to see and experience  this unforgettable area of Africa.

My Favorite Animals on the Chobe:

  • Hippopotamuses

  • African Elephants

  • Crocodiles

"We are first time cruisers and Melinda took the time to explain everything to us so that we felt comfortable with our choices. She was always responsive when we had a question. When an unexpected medical issue caused us to cancel our cruise, she was so helpful in taking us through that process. When we are ready to travel again, we will definitely reach out to Melinda!"
